Love is a new romantic comedy drama from collaborators Netflix and Judd Apatow, the guy behind such films as Knocked Up and The 40 Year Old Virgin, so, as expected, this show very much fits this sort of sardonic rom-com formula.
This first episode has its charms though it’s not super laugh out loud funny it has other things to its credit. They have the pathos nailed down as the two leads, Gillian Jacobs and Paul Rust as Mickey and Gus, live their failed romantic lives. She’s a washout and he’s neurotic, which is a recipe for rom-com cliche but it works because of the assured writing and confident central performances.
It’s not, however, Master of None which managed to completely nail everything about relationships, but it would be unfair to compare. Love is its own thing and after only one episode, it has potential.
